Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information SkysSense (the website skyssense.com and the Android app) uses, why, who it is shared with and what you can do about it.

In short

  • Your location is only used to find the aircraft and the weather around you. SkysSense does not save it.
  • You can use SkysSense without an account. An account is only needed to sync your lists, share photos and appear in the ranking.
  • We don't sell your data or use it for advertising.
  • You can delete your account at any time from the app.

1. Who is responsible

SkysSense is a free plane spotting service. For anything related to your data, write to [email protected].

2. What we use and why

Your location

When you start scanning, your browser or phone asks for permission to share your position. It is used to:

Your location is not linked to your account and is not stored in any SkysSense database. Like any web server, ours keeps standard technical logs for a short time (IP address, time and the address requested, which includes the coordinates of the search) for security and to fix problems.

Your account (optional)

If you create an account we store your email address, the name you choose and your language, and whether you want to receive news by email and appear in the public ranking. Your password is handled by our authentication provider (Supabase) in encrypted form; we never see it. If you sign in with Google, Google shares your name, email address and profile picture with us.

What you save

Your watchlist, favourites and aircraft type collection are kept on your device. If you are signed in, they are also synced to your account so you can use them on other devices.

Photos you share

When you add a photo of an aircraft we store the image, the aircraft details (registration, callsign, model and route), the date and, if you add one, your credit handle (for example your Instagram account). The photo is re-encoded on your device before uploading, which removes hidden information such as the GPS position of the camera. Photos are reviewed before they appear anywhere. Once approved they are public: anyone can see them, together with your credit handle and the likes they receive.

Public profile, likes and follows

If you choose to appear in the ranking, your name, the date you joined, your counts of photos and aircraft types and your approved photos can be seen by anyone, and other people can find you in the search. The likes you give and the spotters you follow are stored with your account; the list of who you follow is only visible to you.

Issue reports

If you report a problem we receive your message, the email address you give (optional), the page address, your browser and device model (user agent), your language and, if you are signed in, your account.

Usage statistics

Only if you accept it in the notice that appears the first time you open SkysSense, we use Google Analytics to understand how it is used (pages visited, type of device and browser, approximate area based on your IP address). It uses cookies. Until you accept, Google Analytics is not even loaded. You can change your choice at any time with Cookies at the bottom of SkysSense, or right here:

Some of these providers may process data outside the European Economic Area. When they do, they apply their own legal safeguards, such as the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.

You can ask to access, correct or delete your data, to receive a copy of it, to limit or object to its use, and withdraw any consent you have given. You can do much of this yourself:

7. Children

SkysSense is not intended for children under 14. If you are younger than the age your country requires to consent on your own, ask a parent or guardian before creating an account.

8. Security

All connections use HTTPS. Access to data in our database is restricted with row level security, so each account can only change its own data, and passwords are never stored in readable form.

9. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top, and if the change is important we will let you know in SkysSense.
